For many years, diarrhea has been the leading cause of calf mortality in the first weeks of life. The spread of pathogens that cause diarrhea can affect up to 100% of a herd, and mortality rates can reach as high as 30%. These conditions often become chronic, manifesting later as reduced performance or increased susceptibility to disease. Combined with the costs of treatment, diarrhea in calves reduces farm profits.

There is a fundamental distinction between infectious and non-infectious causes. Diarrhea in calves is primarily caused by infection, including specific pathogens or multiple infections involving various combinations of pathogens. Rotaviruses and coronaviruses cause significant damage to the intestinal mucosa, while bacterial pathogens, such as E. coli, lead to increased water excretion by the intestines. In addition to viruses and bacteria, Cryptosporidium can also cause severe diarrhea, acting alone or in combination with rotaviruses and coronaviruses.
